CODE OF CONDUCT POLICY

The Student Code of Conduct for student-athletes, performers, and leaders is a district-wide policy and is enforced here at Portage Central High School by the athletic and activities offices.

Before participation in activities in which the code of conduct is required, students are required to attend a code of conduct meeting with a parent or guardian. Each student is only required to attend one meeting for their high school career.

Policies:

Academic Eligibility - All students who participate in groups that have regular performances, events, competitions, or that miss school on a regular basis will be subject to the academic eligibility policy during said group's active period.

An academic eligibility period is Monday through Sunday each week. In order to determine eligibility for each week, academic eligibility will be run the week prior on Thursday morning and finalized the following day at 3:00 pm for the following week (Monday through Sunday). Students with one or more E's will be notified by the activities office on Thursday morning and given until the following day (Friday) to provide evidence their grade has improved for eligibility purposes.

Students will be determined to be academically ineligible if they a) have two or more E's on Friday at 3 pm of the previous week, b) have had the same E for three or more weeks in a row on Friday at 3 pm of the previous week, or c) have an E in any class the week immediately following (and each week thereafter until the student has no E's) a week in which the student was academically ineligible.

Academic Eligibility is using the following classifications for students with E's:

Probation 1 - E in one class without an E in said class the week immediately preceding. Students can participate in all activities while on probation 1.

Probation 2  -  E in one class with an E in said class the week immediately preceding. Students can participate in performances, events, and competitions while on Probation 2 but are required to attend Study Tables* on each day they would like to attend practice or rehearsal until they no longer have an E.

Ineligible - E on one class with an E in said class for the two weeks immediately preceding, an E in two separate classes (no matter the grades the previous week), or an E in a week immediately following a week where a student was academically ineligible, regardless of the class. Ineligible students cannot participate in competitions, events, performances, or school-related absences while ineligible and are required to attend Study Tables each day they wish to participate in practice or rehearsal until they no longer have any E's.

Attendance - Students who wish to participate in any extra-curricular activity outside of the school day (including rehearsals and practices) are required to be in school for the full 7 hours on the day in which they wish to participate.

Exceptions can be made for absences that are unavoidable (funerals, court appearances, etc.) and that are pre-arranged with the activities office. To pre-arrange an absence, contact the activities office.

Mind/Mood-Altering Substances - Students found to be in possession of; found to have consumed; transferred (buy, sell, give away or receive), or be in the presence of underage possession or consumption, regardless of the quantity, location, time of day or year, shall be found in violation of the code of conduct.

A student's first violation will be required to sit 20% of the performances, competitions, or events of the current or upcoming season at the first available opportunity. A student's second violation will be required to sit 50% of the performances, competitions, or events of the current or upcoming season at the first available opportunity. A student's third violation will be required to sit a full calendar year from all activities from the time of the incident.

Please note that all programs have the discretion to impose additional penalties, up to and including removal for any violation.

*Study Tables - Study Tables are held in the Learning Center Monday through Thursday before and after school from 7:00 am to 7:30 am and 3:00 pm to 3:30 pm (we also offer lunch sessions for students who do not drive to school). Students are required to attend Study Tables each day they would like to attend practice or rehearsals while they are on Probation 2 or ineligible or until they no longer have any E's.
